تنقلت بين شعوب غريبهْ

وطئت ترائب خلف البحار

فأيقنت إذ ذاك كم، يا حبيبهْ،

لأرضك أحملُ عشقاً ونار

لقد كان حلماً كئيباً فولّى

وعدت إليك مَشوقاً وبار

شواطيكِ لست أبارح، كلا

فحبك يكبر كل نهار

جبالكِ كم بينها قد شعرت

بمتعة رغبتي، بدفء الدثار

وتلك التي في هواها كبرتُ

أدارت لها مغزلاً قرب نار

نهارك يبدي وليلك يخفي

كروماً رعتني ولوسي صغار

وحقلاً أخيراً رأتْهُ ، يخبّي

بأرضكِ لوسي تحت الحجار

آه، لو أنك تبقى للأبد كما أنت الآن، لكن، أيها الحبيب،

إنك لا تملك نفسك إلا بمقدار حياتك في هذه الدنيا،

فعليك أن تعد نفسك لتواجه هذه النهاية المقبلة،

وتخلع شكلك العذب على إنسان آخر.

هكذا ينبغي لهذا الحسن الذي تحمله فترة من الزمن

ألا ينتهي أبدا

فتحيا بذلك مرة أخرى، بعدما تفنى حياتك

من الذي يدع مثل هذا الكيان البديع يهوى إلى الفناء،

بينما الحياة الزوجية الشريفة يمكنها الحفاظ عليه

ضد الثورات العاصفة في أيام الشتاء

والغضب المجدب وبرودة الموت الأبدي؟

ألا شيء سوى التبديد والضياع أيها الحبيب الغالي

لقد كان لك أب، فليكن لك ابن يناديك بالمثل.

O that you were yourself! But, love, you are
No longer yours than you yourself here live.
Against this coming end you should prepare,
And your sweet semblance to some other give.
So should that beauty which you hold in lease
Find no determination; then you were
Yourself again after your self's decease,
When your sweet issue your sweet form should bear.
Who lets so fair a house fall to decay,
Which husbandry in honour might uphold
Against the stormy gusts of winter's day,
And barren rage of death's eternal cold?
O, none but unthrifts! Dear my love, you know
